Struggling to find work. Struggling to get the money together to pay for your truck training or a truck licence. A government subsidised truck training course can be a great way to enhance your skills and open up new job opportunities. Australia’s truck driver shortage means it’s now easier to find a job. But obtaining a government subsidised training place or other financial help is becoming less attractive when undertaking training for your new career.
Truck Licence only courses do not attracted Government subsidies
We must stress that a government subsidised course are for full qualifications only as defined by the national training standards. Some subsidised qualifications can take over 6 months to complete with the majority of them taking 12 to 24 months to complete. These time frames are defined by government regulation and the national training standards.
While the Certificate III in Driving Operations can include the skills and knowledge required for a truck licence, we understand that this can be a long time and a quicker option needs to be arranged.
For this reason we are able to offer all eligible applicants an opportunity to apply for one of our stand alone truck licences. Please note that these stand alone courses are not subsidised by a government subsidy.
For further information about our various truck courses, visit one of the links below:

- Licence to Drive a Medium Rigid Vehicle
- Licence to Drive a Heavy Rigid Vehicle
- Licence to Drive a Heavy Combination Vehicle

How can a business or individual take advantage of a Government subsidised truck training qualification
A number of programs are operated by state governments throughout Victoria in collaboration with driver training centres, which work with individuals of various backgrounds as well as small-to-medium-sized businesses. Such programs have enabled many men and women to make rewarding career changes. You will need to check your eligibility for government subsidies before applying, which are dependent on factors such as age, citizenship or residency, driving experience and prior educational history.
What do government subsidised truck training courses cover?
When you or your employees enrol in truck courses, you will learn valuable practical and theoretical skills in training exercises and classroom environments. Courses cover aspects of truck driving such as driver safety, technical skills as well as the importance of having the right type of licence. You should check that your driver course will lead to you obtaining the specific licence you desire, from light rigid to multi-combination vehicles or forklifts and other industrial machinery.
My staff may require multiple course. Can government subsidised training course help?
Training courses are designed to meet the individuals and businesses needs. The government subsidies should be used to help fund the main portion of the costs, however, you will need to contribute to the overall costs. With that stated, the Victorian government will allow individuals to enrol into 2 subsidised courses per calendar year.

It would be good to learn and practice the training exercises used to learn how to drive a heavy vehicle. This could also be very beneficial for a company so that they can have someone who can drive heavy vehicles. If I were a company owner, then I would want to have someone who had a heavy vehicle license.

I have my auto license I’m just wondering having issues finding work I’m just wondering is there anyway I can upgrade my licence from hc auto to road Ranger gearbox
Hi Jason,
To upgrade from your auto licence to Non-Synchromesh(road ranger), we are able provide you training in the Heavy Rigid Non-Synchromesh.
Once comfortable, we can assess you on the components needed to upgrade your licence.
As the gearbox conditions remain with you in between licence classes, there is no need to do it in the HC. This allows you to focus on the gearbox.
If you would like to discuss further, please call us on 1300 843 387.

Hi, I have just completed my Cert 3 in warehousing operations, and I already have my LF forklift.
As part of the warehouse course I partook work experience at a place here in WA, where a position opened up. I applied, but they required a HR truck as well. Discussions with management, I found they were happy with my work there and were prepared to give me driving experience, but couldn’t offer paid employment without the HR.
If I get the HR, a position may not be there anymore, but I’m sure having it and with driving experience I can gain, I am positive it would be of assistance in finding employment.
Me saying, I am broke and cant afford the lessons etc are an understatement! So is this available in Western Australia and if yes how to apply for eligibility.
Thank you, Chris
Hi Chirs,
At this stage we don’t have a site in Western Australia.

Does the government funded course for truck licence include those who work as casuals? I am looking at doing something different career wise but prices to get the licences done are pretty expensive. Would be great to know thanks.
Hi Nazmi,
Under the Victorian Training Guarantee (VTG), the government provides funding to trainees who are looking to up skill their qualifications.
Therefore, if you don’t already hold a Certificate IV qualification or above, we may be able to assist you with a government funded course.
If you can give us a call on 1300 843 387, we can discuss your options with you to determine if you are eligible for government funding.

TIDE Training
If I have a Health Care Card but have a Diploma is there any Concession available.
Hi Damian,
Government funding, and therefore concessions, are managed via the Victorian Training Guarantee (VTG). The main aim of the VTG is to provide people with upskilling opportunities. As we only offer qualifications up to a Certificate IV level, we would be unable to provide you with any concessions as a Diploma is rated higher.

Hi i live in Perth and i am currently wanting to get my HR license for a long term career as a truck driver. What would be the best way for me to obtain this license at minimal cost? Are there any subsidies?
Thanks,
Chris
Hi Chris
Firstly as you are in Perth I will need to know if you are moving to Melbourne for the training. If so then are you changing over your Licence to Victoria or will it remain a WA Licence. Secondly, there is Government funding available but there is certain criteria to be eligible. I would suggest you send through your contact number to enquiry@tide.com.au so we can discuss this further.

Hi,
I have a certificate II in hospitality but in this course they gave me certificate III Health service assistance in 2008 which i was then holding a Temporary visa.
I now have Permanent residency and and would like to know if i would be eligible to do Truck or MR/HR course?
Hi Vatan,
You would be eligible to undertake a MR/HR license on its own which would cost around $1000 but in order to be eligible for government assistance we would need to confirm what level qualification you hold whether its a Cert II or Cert III. Can you call our business development staff member, Rob on 0448183650 to discuss.
Regards Rob Wade
It is really great news for the candidates who are unable to join truck training due to lack of money. I appreciate your work for providing such useful information online.
Hi, i lived in Melbourne for more than a year, and i finished CERT 3 in Civil Construction and CERT 3 in Warehousing Operations. Currently i am trying to seek a job in Perth as a Mobile Plant Operator, unfortunately they require HR LICENCE, which is way too expensive for me. Would i still be qualified to do a course in HR LICENSE or TRUCK DRIVING LICENCE?..Thank you very much for your kindest regard on this matter!
Hi Rolando,
Unfortunately it sounds like you would not be eligible for any government funding, considering you currently hold a Cert III qualification and we do not offer a Cert IV in Driving Operations.
We may have other options so please feel free to call Rob on 0448183650 to discuss.
Regards

i do know that you have put this on here before and i dont mean to ask the same question again but, are we talking about any certificates. it doesnt seem at all fair if you have a cert in something that no longer applies to your current situation. im hoping that made a little sence
Hi Lisa
If you hold a current certificate 3 or higher unfortunately you will not be able to complete another certificate.
If you would like to discuss this further I would be more than happy to call you.

In Melbourne you may be eligible for the Victorian Training Guarantee. This entitles you to government funding at certificate qualification level if you do not already hold a qualification at that level or higher. In our Driving Operations certificate qualifications, we offer the option of Heavy Vehicle licencing.
If you currently hold a concession card or are an eligible job seeker, you may be entitled to additional funding.
Feel free to give us a call on 1300 843 387 if you would like to further discuss your options.
